The first ever equestrian competition at our new Delores Barr Weaver Therapeutic Equestrian Center was held Thursday.
The Special Olympics event brought top riders for competition through a series of challenges.
NFSSE Postgraduate student Sierra was among the competitors who rode Chief. She shared her secret of success. “Sis (Van Cleave) says you always have to be nice to the horses and build that relationship with them,” explains Sierra who had a home field advantage because the center is her Thursday job site. “By being kind to them and thinking of them as your friend, they’ll respond to you. It’s important to be close to the horses.”
Keeping a careful eye on the competition was Andrew Sack who is the Head Coach for the Eagles Equestrian program. “The riders exceeded my expectations and were stellar on the course,” says Sack. “It was so great to see everyone do so well!”
